Jean Lugg (nee Burgess)
Jean Burgess, was born on 03 July 1909 in Grantown-on-Spey. She came from a family of tailors who lived and worked in Grantown since it was founded. She worked in the Grantown post office from the age of 14 until 1941 when she moved south to help with the war effort.
After the war she married Kenneth John Lugg, a Sugar Engineer, who had spent his war time in Burma and then India, helping to police Calcutta during the partition of India and Pakistan.
They bought Rosehall Guest House in Grantown’s square in 1953 just before John moved to work in Cuba. For the next 5 years Jean looked after the guest house in the summer and then joined her husband in Cuba in the winter.
By 1958 Cuba was in the midst of major civil unrest as rebels led by Fidel Castro and Augusto Che Guevara tried to overthrow American backed Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista.
