Their Past Your Future Personal Wartime memoriesTheir Past Your Future - Personal Wartime Memories

This collection of personal memories, published by Grantown Museum , is part of the ‘Their Past Your Future’ project organised by the Imperial War Museum to coincide with the sixtieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

The memories in this compilation are from people resident in and around Grantown in 2005 and are widely varied. Some of those interviewed for the project were very young at the time of the war, others definitely adult. Some were men, some women. Some were in uniformed services, some civilians. One worked for the Free French, another, a child at the time, witnessed at very close quarters the German occupation in Norway. Others lived locally – a land girl at Clury, a very young member of the Home Guard at Nethybridge, a teenager who worked at the Craiglynne.

The most moving recollections are probably those of John ‘Bookie’ Stuart who volunteered aged nineteen and only six days after the declaration of war for the RAF and flew thirty-three missions as a rear gunner. The book has been organised in to five chapters to cover different aspects and stages of the war, and makes an excellent read both for those who have an interest in the history of the locality as well as those who have a more general interest in the wider aspects of the war. It is available in the Museum bookshop.
